Raw feeding is a growing trend among dog owners. Some people are fanatic about it. It's really about giving dogs good quality, high-protein meals. The majority of mainstream pet food contain very low amounts of protein and lots of 'filler'. The benefits, though not scientifically proven, include shinier coats, better energy levels (including less anxiety), and better teeth health, among other things. However, it isn't a cure-all. And some dogs simply don't get on with it and it can make them ill, like any food. Each dog's diet should be considered on an individual level.
The two main 'schools' of feeding dogs raw food are BARF and PMR. BARF stands for Biologically Appropriate Raw Food. PMR stands for Prey Model Raw. Both models advocate a raw-fed diet consisting of 80% meat (including bone and offal) or more. The primary difference is that the PMR model doesn't include plant-based foods. It has a specific ratio of 80% muscle meat, 10% bone, 5% liver and 5% other secreting organs. The BARF diet is slightly less prescriptive and advocates 80-95% meat, bone and offal, with additional plant-based foods.
There's a lot of discussion in the raw feeding industry about whether or not dogs should consume foods in addition to meat, such as fruit and vegetables. There isn't really a consensus - or scientific proof - either way. Generally speaking, a dog will do great on solely a good quality meat based diet. However, there is some evidence that feeding your dogs specific fruits and vegetables will benefit them. Put simply, some vegetables contain micronutrients that dogs just don't simply get enough of in a solely meat based diet, such as iodine.
